Catalyst
Mission Statement
Catalyst is a group of socially diverse, progressive minded people who join
together in fun and purpose to make Birmingham a better place to live. The
organization was founded in late 2003 by a group of progressive citizens who met
frequently to discuss issues affecting the city and region. Formally
organized in early 2004, Catalyst has grown to more than 1,000 members
representing all walks of life in the greater Birmingham region. Catalyst’s
slogan, “Hip to Be Civic,” reflects the idea that board leadership and civic
involvement are keys to an improved quality of life in Birmingham. Simply
put, Catalyst believes that Birmingham’s future will be positively impacted if
we empower citizens to:
- Explore all issues facing the region
- Identify an
issue or cause that they support
- Implement change by becoming an active
participant in the dialogue surrounding the issue.
The core of the
organization’s work revolves around six pillars which include leadership
development, economic development, urban sustainability, parks and greenspace,
arts and culture and political awareness. Through its pillars, think tank
discussions, public forums and social events, Catalyst serves as a liaison
between good ideas and solutions. Catalyst connects the people who have the
vision and enthusiasm for positive change with those individuals, governments
and organizations who can affect change in the City of Birmingham and
surrounding regions. hiptobecivic.com/
